Much of it can be repurposed into useful equipment and is often of better build quality. Skates also have the potential to be useful in northern climates as a means of going places over frozen lakes and rivers (their original purpose) and of course, cross country ski's are a great mode of transport. The trick with sports equipment is to determine the usefulness of it (an oak bat is very useful as a bludgeon, an aluminum one won't tend to stand up to that kind of non-standard use for very long) and buy on that basis, not on shinyness or usefulness for sports.
