[...] Many vegetarians are so for compassionate reasons; they don’t want to contribute to the suffering of animals. Others are vegetarians to reduce their impact on the planet, as raising beef, for example, requires ten times as much land and vastly more energy than growing the equivalent amount of calories in vegetables. These are two of the primary reasons people go veg. [...]

By the way, I found a similar article the other day with a few extra reasons why you should go veg. If you want to check it out it's: http://www.kaycircle.com/index.php?q=10_reasons_to_become_a_Vegetarian

I have a feeling that another good reason to go veg*n en masse is karma. Billions of people killing and eating many more billions of other animals every year cannot be good for our species' karmic piggy bank (pardon the pun), can it? Further, becoming a kinder, gentler species might help us have more compassion for future generations of our own and other species.

One more reason: Resource Conservation.

It takes 10 lbs of grain and 100 gallons of water to produce 1 pound of beef. If we reduced our meat consumption and rather focused on producing vegetables and grains for human consumption, we could essentially eliminate the world wide food shortages.
