Sometimes, Internet petitions are useful. They are a way for people to speak out against their leaders en masse, or to show broad support for a person or cause. Really, we are speaking to each other through these petitions, because generally our ‘leaders’ are ignoring the messages we are sending.
So let us stand with the Maldives, whose President has said
Some might prefer us to suffer in silence but today we have decided to speak. And so I make this pledge today: We will not die quietly.
Here is the petition; please go and sign it. Imagine if hundreds of thousands – millions – of people from developed countries sign this petition, and it is then delivered to the President of the Maldives. I will deliver it in person if need be.
To the President of the Maldives:
I urge the Maldives and other threatened countries to immediately charge Rex Tillerson* for crimes against humanity.
Let us stand with all those in imminent and inevitable danger of losing their homes, their businesses, their land – everything. Let us tell them that we do not agree with our leaders, that we want to do what must be done to combat climate change.
By my signature, be it known that I stand with you and your people. I want decisive action on climate change now, and I urge you to take action now to begin holding the obstructors, the liars, and the paid deniers accountable for their crimes.
* For those who don’t know, Tillerson is the CEO of ExxonMobil, which has funded climate deniers for years. Climate deniers are largely funded by oil, coal, and aut0mobile companies, and many worked on campaigns for the tobacco, asbestos, and other companies. These paid shills are fools at best, soulless demons at worst, and must be stopped by civilised people.
